CFI 2073 - Legal Issues in Cybersecurity

Course Description: This course offers an overview of the legal processes involved in information security and privacy. The course begins with an exploration of common concepts in information security, privacy, and the law and then expands into a review several federal and state laws and legal concepts that affect how governments and organizations address issues of information security. The conclusion of the course addresses how to create an information security program that includes information governance, risk management, and contingency planning, as well as the essentials of investigating security incidents.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  1. explain fundamental concepts of information systems security (ISS), privacy, and legal protections.
  2. identify the basic components of the American legal system.
  3. describe select U.S. federal compliance laws and the legal aspects that affect information security and privacy.
  4. describe state legal compliance laws addressing breach notification.
  5. analyze intellectual property laws.
  6. describe the role of contracts and identify legal issues in cyberspace.
  7. describe the principles of information governance within organizations.
  8. explain the importance of risk management and contingency planning.
  9. explain the importance of proper forensic examination techniques to legal proceedings.
