DENH 1060 - Pharmacology for the Dental Hygienist

Course Description: This course provides an introduction to drug actions, mechanisms of drugs, and bodily reactions. Special emphasis will be given to the oral and systemic effects of drugs and how they my affect dental treatment.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course students will be able to:

  1. discuss the physiologic, psychologic, and social consequences of drug abuse.
  2. describe the physiology of the organ system effected.
  3. explain the therapeutic and non-therapeutic action of the drugs on each organ system.
  4. list oral manifestations of drug therapy.
  5. recognize oral and systemic symptoms of drug interactions.
  6. identify those drugs which are both safe and unsafe for use during pregnancy.
  7. identify indications and contraindication to the use of drugs in the treatment of dental disease.
