DENH 2020 - General and Oral Pathology

Course Description: This course is a study of general and oral pathology with topics of special interest to the dental hygienist. It will cover the etiology and symptomatology of oral diseases and oral manifestations of systemic diseases. Special emphasis is placed on the hygienists role in educating patients about oral health and disease and modifying dental hygiene treatment plans for patients who have pathological conditions.

  7. Inflammation, repair, and immunity
  8. Intrinsic and extrinsic factors in disease
  9. Neoplasms and cystic diseases
  10. Oral lesions and fibrous diseases
  11. Using differential diagnosis in identifying lesions

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course students will be able to:

  1. summarize the cellular basis of life and disease.
  2. identify intrinsic, extrinsic, and retrogressive changes that cause disease.
  3. describe the structural and functional changes of the body in response to disease including inflammation, healing, and immune response.
  4. discuss developmental and genetic disease.
  5. identify the developmental anomalies of the dentition.
  6. identify normal and abnormal development consistent with chronological age of the patient throughout the lifespan of the dental patient.
  7. classify neoplasms of epithelial and mesenchymal origin and cystic diseases.
  8. describe the systemic and oral manifestations of endocrine, blood, and immune diseases.
  9. identify the oral manifestations of disease therapy including pharmaceuticals and radiation.
  10. classify viral, bacterial, and fungal diseases and recognize systemic and oral symptoms.
  11. identify characteristics of benign, fibrous, premalignant, and malignant lesions.
  12. outline accommodations to dental treatment required for disease-compromised patients.
  13. summarize the concept of differential diagnosis in diagnosing abnormalities.
