EDUC 1050 - Reading and Study Skills Education Strategies

Course Description: This course presents the fundamentals of reading and study skills instruction. The focus is understanding the skills and strategies necessary to assist children in learning to read and comprehend text. Field experience is required to practice, reflect, and assess reading strategies learned in class. Students must provide their own transportation. A Minnesota Human Services background study with no restrictions may be required.

Prerequisite(s): Assessment score placement in RDNG 1000  or completion of RDNG 0900  or RDNG 0950  with a grade of C or higher.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course students will be able to:

  1. explain what scientific research says about how children learn to read.
  2. explain the foundations of reading comprehension.
  3. examine the five areas of reading instruction: phonemic awareness, phonic, fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension.
  4. identify sensory modalities to learning.
  5. apply sensory modalities to literacy instruction.
  6. select developmental, age-appropriate, and culturally sensitive text.
  7. utilize available resources (including technology) for supporting instruction in the subject of reading.
  8. create lesson plans related to reading comprehension strategies.
  9. teach reading comprehension strategies to K-12 students.
  10. observe and participate in a variety of reading methodologies.
  11. assess reading comprehension.
