SOC 2061 - Sociology of Gender and Work

Course Description: How does gender influence your occupational choices and opportunities? This course explores the changing relationship between gender and the institution of work. Topics include individual level issues of identity and relationships as well as structural issues of inequality and public policy.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course students will be able to:

  1. Describe the relationship between changes in the institution of work and gendered work aspirations of men and women.
  2. Analyze the gendered nature of selected occupations.
  3. Discuss core concepts, theories, and research findings related to the study of gender and work.
  4. Explain how sociological theories about gender and work can be applied to the workplace.
  5. Critique social policies directed toward the workplace.
  6. Develop alternative ways to conceptualize the relationship between work and family life.
