TRIN 1031 - Standards of Practice and Skills of Interpreting

Credits: 3
Hours/Week: Lecture None Lab None
Course Description: This course focuses on developing critical-thinking, decision-making, and cognitive skills related to interpreting. Coursework includes comparing and contrasting interpreting codes of ethics in different subdomains, reading and discussion of theory and research in the field, role-plays, and other exercises.

Prerequisite(s): TRIN 1000  with grade of C or higher, or concurrently enrolled. Course placement into college-level English and Reading OR completion of ENGL 0950  with a grade of C or higher OR completion of RDNG 0940  with a grade of C or higher and qualifying English Placement Exam OR completion of RDNG 0950  with a grade of C or higher and ENGL 0090  with a grade of C or higher OR completion of ESOL 0051  with a grade of C or higher and ESOL 0052  with a grade of C or higher; or instructor consent.
Corequisite(s): None
Recommendation: Language proficiency level equivalent to the American College Teachers of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) advanced-mid or higher rating in both English and the second language.

At the end of this course students will be able to:

  2. demonstrate basic situational management strategies.
  3. display basic competence in consecutive interpreting.
  4. describe basic concepts in the field.
  5. explain the role of the interpreter.
  6. describe the cognitive processes of interpreting.
  7. apply the principles of one or more interpreting standards of practice and codes of ethics.
