COS 1000 - Preclinical Introduction

Course Description: This course provides an introduction to cosmetology careers including professional image, Minnesota laws and rules, safety, and sanitation. Anatomy, electricity, and chemistry as related to the profession will also be included. Students must be able to perform physical tasks to complete course requirements.

Prerequisite(s): Course placement into ENGL 0950  and RDNG 0950  or above OR completion of RDNG 0940  with a grade of C or higher OR course placement into ESOL 0051  and ESOL 0052  and ESOL 1033  OR completion of ESOL 0041  with a grade of C or higher and ESOL 0042  with a grade of C or higher and ESOL 0043  with a grade of C or higher.

  1. Professional ethics towards clients, coworkers and employers
  2. Professional and physical image
  3. Types of bacteria
  4. Difference between pathogenic and nonpathogenic bacteria
  5. Minnesota laws and rules of cosmetology, esthetician, and manicurist
  6. Sanitation, disinfection and sterilization
  7. Mixing and method of disinfection for all equipment
  8. Nature of electricity and uses
  9. Understanding of anatomy and physiology as related to cosmetology, esthetics, or nail care
  10. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)
  11. Hazardous waste

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course students will be able to:

  1. identify Minnesota laws and rules as related to Cosmetology.
  2. analyze facets of professionalism in the cosmetology field
  3. demonstrate professional image development.
  4. demonstrate safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste.
  5. describe proper disinfecting agents and procedures.
  6. demonstrate knowledge of anatomy, electricity and chemistry as related to the profession.
