RADT 1781 - Clinical Radiography I

Credits: 5
Hours/Week: Lecture None Lab None
Course Description: The course is designed to provide students with opportunities to apply basic theoretical principles of radiography and patient care to practical experience in the clinical setting. Students will assist with and perform basic radiographic procedures under the direction of a qualified practitioner at affiliated clinical sites.  State regulations regarding safe operation of radiation-generating equipment will be followed and proper radiation safety practices will be adhered to.  Students must be able to perform physical tasks to complete course requirements. Acceptance into the Radiologic Technology program is required. This course requires a Minnesota Human Services background study with no restrictions.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course students will be able to:

  1. Perform routine chest, abdomen, extremity and vertebral column radiographic examinations with direct supervision until competency has been achieved by applying the relevant theoretical components of RADT 1020 - Fundamentals of Radiography , RADT 1031 - Anatomy and Positioning I  and RADT 1040 - Radiographic Exposure Factors .
  2. Perform digital computed radiography (CR) processing by applying the theoretical components discussed in RADT 1040 - Radiographic Exposure Factors .
  3. Perform portable chest, abdomen and extremity radiographic examinations with direct supervision until competency has been achieved by applying the relevant theoretical components of RADT 1020 - Fundamentals of Radiography , RADT 1031 - Anatomy and Positioning I , and RADT 1040 - Radiographic Exposure Factors .
  4. Perform fluoroscopic procedures with direct technologist supervision until competency has been achieved by applying the relevant theoretical components of RADT 1031 - Anatomy and Positioning I  and RADT 1040 - Radiographic Exposure Factors
  5. Locate and describe hospital departments and patient care units within the hospital/medical center as described in RADT 1020 - Fundamentals of Radiography .
  6. Locate all supplies used to perform radiographic procedures in each rotation area and replenish stock daily/when necessary as discussed in RADT 1020 - Fundamentals of Radiography  and RADT 1031 - Anatomy and Positioning I .
  7. Demonstrate appropriate communication and patient care skills when interacting with patients and other hospital personnel as discussed in RADT 1020 - Fundamentals of Radiography .
  8. Apply basic radiation safety practices when performing all radiographic procedures using the ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) principle as discussed in the theoretical content of RADT 1040 - Radiographic Exposure Factors  to protect patients, hospital personnel and self.
  9. Apply principles of body mechanics and safety as discussed in RADT 1020 - Fundamentals of Radiography  when transporting patients and life support equipment.
  10. Assist technologist when performing surgical radiographic procedures.
  11. Discuss the relevant theoretical content of RADT 1031 - Anatomy and Positioning I  and RADT 1040 - Radiographic Exposure Factors  during Image Analysis sessions with Clinical Coordinator.
  12. Locate emergency equipment within the Radiology Department and demonstrate understanding of emergency protocol as discussed in RADT 1020 - Fundamentals of Radiography .
  13. Perform specific rotation objectives in assigned clinical rotations.
  14. Perform examinations with limited supervision after competency has been achieved by applying the relevant theoretical components of RADT 1020 - Fundamentals of Radiography , RADT 1031 - Anatomy and Positioning I , and RADT 1040 - Radiographic Exposure Factors .
