MUSC 1027 - Beginning Group Guitar

Course Description: This course is an introduction to basic guitar skills in a classroom setting. The course covers topics such as chords, strumming, finger picking, improvisation, music reading and guitar technique, and introduces guitar styles such as rock, folk, blues and classical. Practice outside class is necessary for completion of this course. Students must provide their own guitar. Students already proficient in the areas listed in the course description should register for individual instruction.

Major Content
1. Note and rhythm reading, using both standard music notation and tablature

2. Learning and performing simple classical pieces

3. Chord accompaniments, including reading chord diagrams and using basic strumming patterns

4. 12-Bar Blues and improvisation

5. Proper Guitar technique, including sitting position, left hand and finger position, fingerpicking, and use of a flat pick
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course, students will be able to:

1. read and play simple melodies in standard musical notation and tablature.

2. perform a simple classical guitar piece.

3. read and play from chord diagrams.

4. play simple chord accompaniments with basic strum patterns.

5. play a basic 12-Bar Blues progression and improvise using the pentatonic scale.

6. perform a simple fingerpicking song.

7. demonstrate proper guitar technique, including sitting position, right-hand and left-hand technique.
