Program Description
The Special Education Transfer Pathway AS degree offers students a powerful option: the opportunity to complete an Associate of Science degree with course credits that directly transfer the entire completed degree to designated parallel Special Education bachelor’s degree programs at Minnesota State universities with junior-year status. This degree also prepares students for work as paraprofessionals or educational assistants in a PK-12 classroom.The Special Education Transfer Pathway Degree prepares students to identify and teach students with a wide range of learning, mental, emotional, physical, or developmental disabilities. Disability areas may include autism, speech and language impairments, blindness, deafness, or emotional disabilities. The curriculum has been specifically designed with the Minnesota Standards of Effective Practice for Teachers and includes the full Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC).
Minnesota State universities include: Bemidji State University; Metropolitan State University; Minnesota State University, Mankato; Minnesota State University Moorhead; Southwest Minnesota State University; St. Cloud State University; and Winona State University.

MnTC/General Education Requirements
Goal 2: Critical Thinking
Fulfilled when all MnTC goals for this degree are complete.
Goal 3: Natural Sciences
Minimum of 7 credits; Two courses from two different disciplines with at least one traditional lab course
Goal 4: Math/Logical Reasoning
Minimum of 3 credits. Courses must be numbered between Math 1020 and MATH 1082 ; (not PHIL 1041 ).
Goal 5: History/Social/Behavioral Sciences
Minimum of 9 credits. Three courses from three different disciplines.
Goal 6: Humanities/Fine Arts
Minimum of 9 credits. Three courses, at least ONE of which must be a literature course,from three different disciplines.
Goals 7-10: Theme Goals
Three credits in each of four Goal areas selected from Goals 7, 8, 9 and 10 are required. Many courses from Goals 1-6 also meet Goals 7-10. One course may fulfill a maximum of two Goals. Credits count only once.

- Each EDUC course requires 10 hours of field-based work, for a total of 40 hours to graduate with degree. 10 hours of these field-based work hours must be in a Special Education classroom setting
- Take MTLE Basic Skills Licensure exams before earning this degree, if not met by ACT/SAT scores
- 40 MNTC credits must satisfy all 10 MnTC Goals
- Earn a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 for college-level coursework (courses numbered 1000 and above)

- Create professional electronic portfolios displaying achievement in the field of special education.
