Program Description

The CJS Private Security Certificate is designed for Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement students and working professionals who have an interest in the field of private security. This certificate program provides students with a comprehensive overview of the field of private security and its role in securing the country’s critical infrastructure. Students will also examine the role of investigations in private security.

Program Learning Outcomes

At the end of this program students will be able to:

  1. Describe the historical development of private sector security and investigations.
  2. Discuss the legal ramifications of privatization and its growing presence in the area of social control and emerging technologies.
  3. Describe the different types of positions available in the private security field.
  4. Describe and demonstrate oral and nonverbal communication and collection of verbal information using criminal justice theory and methods.
  5. Describe and demonstrate the fundamental principles and procedures employed in the criminal investigation process.
  6. Discuss and describe the sociological theory and methods used to study the substantive nature and historical development of criminal law.
