Program Description

The Century College Associate Degree Nursing Program is designed to educate students to begin professional nursing careers and administer safe, culturally-competent, patient-centered nursing care in a variety of healthcare settings in our increasingly diverse communities. The Nursing Program curriculum model is concept-based and is structured with exemplars that build from simple to complex. Emphasis is placed on the development of clinical judgment. Application of learning takes place in a variety of clinical settings and on-campus simulations and lab. Graduates are awarded an Associate of Science Degree in Nursing and are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensing Exam for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) and meet the Minnesota State Board of Nursing requirements for licensure.

Program Prerequisites

Application requirements:

Special application is needed. Please see holistic admission information on Nursing program web page

Components of the application include:

  • Experience and Attributes Essay questions
  • Health Science Reasoning Test (HSRT-AD)
  • Nursing Program Quiz
  • Previous Degrees and Certifications.

Although not part of the application requirements, for full acceptance into the program, students must have a GPA of 2.75 or higher in four MnTC/General Education courses (see list below) to start the NURS courses. If these are not completed, they should be in progress at the time of application.

Full Acceptance Requirements:

Note: For full acceptance GPA calculation, BIOL 2031, 2032, and/or 2035 will be considered in place of BIOL 1020/1041 and/or CHEM 1020/1041 to reach the 2.75 GPA requirement if needed.
  • Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance when there are more applicants than spaces in the program. Applicants are ranked and selected for acceptance based on criteria
  • Please refer to the Nursing application information available on the Nursing program web page. Applicants are responsible for knowing the information including any changes as these materials are updated regularly
  • Students are strongly encouraged to consult with an advisor or counselor for academic planning

Special Instructions

Minnesota Department of Human Services requires any individual having contact with patients to complete a background study prior to starting the clinical experience. An individual may be disqualified from having patient contact and would not be permitted to participate in the clinical experience if a clearance is not issued. This would result in the inability to successfully complete the nursing course requirements. The Minnesota Board of Nursing requires all new licensure applicants to complete an FBI Fingerprint Federal Background Study. Results of this study may affect a new licensure applicant’s ability to become licensed as a Registered Nurse in Minnesota.

To protect the health of the people students care for, our clinical partners require students to fulfill certain health requirements including vaccinations. See the nursing program web page for further information.

Program Note

Students must earn a minimum of a C grade in every required course for the Nursing degree.

Most of the required nursing courses are offered ONLY during the day. Some of the clinical experiences may be during evening hours. Students must follow the prescribed schedule. Some of the general education courses may be offered ONLY day or evening. For most students, the time for completion of this degree is longer than two years, due to student preference for completing many of the general education courses prior to starting the nursing courses. Nursing courses start each Fall and Spring Semesters.

Transfer, Articulation Agreements, and Partnerships

See the Century College website for information regarding transfer.

This degree program is designed for both employment preparation and transfer. Some of the courses may not transfer to a number of four-year colleges. If you are considering the possibility of transfer, you may wish to talk with your advisor, counselor, or program instructor before registering to discuss your goals, look at programs designed for transfer, and develop a plan. A Minnesota statewide nursing articulation agreement provides articulation agreements to students who pursue their bachelor’s degree from most baccalaureate nursing programs offered throughout the state.
