Basic Welding Certificate

Program Description

The welding certificate program provides workplace safety training and is designed to expose students to the most common welding process, blue print reading and application used in the welding industry: OAC (oxygen acetylene cutting), PAC (plasma arc cutting), OAW (oxygen acetylene welding), GMAW (gas metal arc welding), SMAW (shielded metal arc welding), FCAW (flux cored arc welding), and GTAW (gas tungsten arc welding). This Basic Welding Certificate prepares students to meet the welding industry’s expectations of a skilled entry-level welder.

Program Prerequisites

Course placement into ENGL 0950  and RDNG 0950  or above OR completion of RDNG 0940  with a grade of C or higher OR course placement into ESOL 0051  and ESOL 0052  and ESOL 1033  OR completion of ESOL 0041  with a grade of C or higher and ESOL 0042  with a grade of C or higher and ESOL 0043  with a grade of C or higher; arithmetic placement score of 64 or higher or elementary algebra placement score of 76 or higher OR placement score/ACT score placement into MATH 0070  or above OR completion of MATH 0030  or MATH 0060  with a grade of C or higher. We strongly encourage students who score below 64 to meet with an advisor or counselor to discuss their review and course options PRIOR to Math placement retesting or registering for a Math course OR Instructor Consent.

Special Instructions

Students who need to complete developmental courses may take them concurrently with Welding courses.

Program Learning Outcomes

At the end of this program students will be able to:

  1. Read blueprints and make correct welds and weld fit-ups per print.
  2. Work safely in the welding industry.
  3. Set up and, operate OAC (oxygen acetylene cutting), PAC (plasma arc cutting), OAW (oxygen acetylene welding).
  4. Set up, operate and perform GMAW (gas metal arc welding).
  5. Set up, operate and perform FCAW (flux cored arc welding)
  6. Set up, operate and perform SMAW (shielded metal arc welding,
  7. Set up, operate and perform GTAW (gas tungsten arc welding). 
  8. Work independently and in teams to troubleshoot and creatively solve a wide range of industry-based challenges using critical thinking skills, troubleshooting, and blueprint reading abilities in any welding-related industry.
  9. Have the knowledge of the welding process.
