Program Description

The Communication Studies Transfer Pathway AA degree offers students a powerful option: the opportunity to complete an Associate of Arts degree with course credits that directly transfer to designated Communication Studies bachelor’s degree programs at Minnesota State universities. The curriculum has been specifically designed so that students completing this pathway degree and transferring to one of the seven Minnesota State universities enter the university with junior-year status. All courses in the Transfer Pathway associate degree will directly transfer and apply to the designated bachelor’s degree programs in a related field.

Minnesota State universities include:  Bemidji State University; Metropolitan State University; Minnesota State University, Mankato; Minnesota State University Moorhead; Southwest Minnesota State University; St. Cloud State University; and Winona State University.

Special Instructions

Students planning to transfer to a university outside of the Minnesota State system are advised to consult with their intended transfer institution as early as possible to determine transferability of the courses in this Transfer Pathway degree.

Goal 1: Communication

Goal 2: Critical Thinking


Fulfilled when all MnTC goals for this degree are complete.

Goal 3: Natural Sciences


Minimum of 7 credits. Two courses from two different disciplines with at least one traditional lab course.

Goal 4: Math/Logical Reasoning


Minimum of 3 credits. Courses must be numbered between MATH 1025  and MATH 1082 , or PHIL 1041

Goal 5: History/Social/Behavioral Sciences


Minimum of 9 credits. Three courses from three different disciplines.

Goal 6: Humanities/Fine Arts


Minimum of 9 credits. Three courses, at least ONE of which must be a literature course, from three different disciplines.

Goals 7-10: Theme Goals


Three credits in each of four Goal areas selected from Goals 7, 8, 9 and 10 are required.  Many courses from Goals 1-6 also meet Goals 7-10. One course may fulfill a maximum of two Goals. Credits count only once.

Program Learning Outcomes

At the end of this program students will be able to:

  1. Utilize appropriate research strategies to discover and ethically integrate supporting materials from diverse sources and points of view.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to listen, analyze, and provide feedback on public discourse.
  3. Analyze the role of verbal and nonverbal communication in various interpersonal episodes and diverse contexts.
  4. Develop skill sets in managing active listening, perception, disclosure, and conflict.
  5. Develop skill sets in applying principles and practices of small group communication.
  6. Manage the interpersonal dynamics of small group communication.
  7. Explore how cultural identity shapes, and is shaped by, communication.
  8. Compare/contrast patterns of thought, value, belief, and behavior (verbal and nonverbal) exhibited in different cultures.
