- Anatomy of the periodontium (microscopic and clinical)
- The hygienist’s role in periodontal assessment, diagnosis, care planning, and therapy
- Utilizing radiographs to assess the periodontal condition
- Legal aspects of periodontal co-therapy with the dental hygienist and other health care providers
- The hygienist’s role in patient education for the periodontal patient
- Healthy versus diseased periodontium (microscopic and clinical anatomy)
- Etiology of periodontal diseases
- Risk factors in periodontal disease
- Elements of a comprehensive clinical periodontal assessment
- Risk assessment and analysis for periodontal disease genesis
- Periodontal disease classifications
Learning Outcomes At the end of this course students will be able to:
- describe the clinical and microscopic features of periodontal anatomy in health and disease.
- explain periodontal disease etiology and progression.
- identify classifications of periodontal disease.
- evaluate systemic, local, and lifestyle risk factors in periodontal disease genesis and progression.
- use radiographs to assess the periodontal condition.
- identify the hygienist’s role in the comprehensive clinical assessment of the periodontium.
- discuss the hygienist’s role in patient education related to periodontal disease.
