COS 1007 - Preclinic Hair Styling and Design

Credits: 3
Hours/Week: Lecture 2 Lab 2
Course Description: This course provides instruction in elementary hair service skills including trichology, shampooing, conditioning, thermal and wet hairstyling on all types and lengths of hair, wigs, and extensions. Students must be able to perform physical tasks to complete course requirements.

Prerequisite(s): Course placement into ENGL 0950 and RDNG 0950 or above OR completion of RDNG 0940 with a grade of “C” or higher OR course placement into ESOL 0041 and ESOL 0052 and ESOL 1033 OR completion of ESOL 0031 with a grade of “C” or higher and ESOL 0042 with a grade of “C” or higher and ESOL 0043 with a grade of “C” or higher.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course students will be able to:

  1. describe hair structure and disorders of the hair and scalp.
  2. demonstrate hair analysis.
  3. demonstrate shampooing techniques.
  4. perform scalp and hair treatments.
  5. list types of shampoos and conditioners and their effects on hair.
  6. demonstrate a variety of hair styling techniques.
  7. describe finishing techniques for wigs, extensions, or enhancements.
  8. practice safety precautions for student and client.
  9. demonstrate safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste.
  10. demonstrate appropriate and effective client communication.
