OFFT 2010 - Medical Office Terminology

Course Description: This course is intended for students interested in medical office careers. The focus is on medical terminology as it relates to healthcare documentation with an emphasis on word-building techniques, usage, and spelling.

Prerequisite(s): Course placement into college-level English and Reading OR completion of ENGL 0950  with a grade of C or higher OR completion of RDNG 0940  with a grade of C or higher and qualifying English Placement Exam OR completion of RDNG 0950  with a grade of C or higher and ENGL 0090  with a grade of C or higher OR completion of ESOL 0051  with a grade of C or higher and ESOL 0052  with a grade of C or higher.

  1. Communication/pronunciation of medical terms
  2. Correspondence utilizing medical terminology
  3. Integration of independent medical terms into working sentence structure

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course students will be able to:

  1. construct medical terms using word-building rules
  2. identify primary terms according to body systems
  3. utilize appropriate reference materials efficiently to research and/or verify medical data.
  4. demonstrate correct pronunciation of medical terminology.
  5. use word-building techniques
  6. identify body systems.
  7. identify medical specialty areas.
  8. identify diseases, their etiology, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis.
