ENGR 2071 - Fluid Mechanics

Course Description: This course covers principles of mass, conservation of momentum, fluid statics, the Bernoulli equation, control volume analysis, dimensional analysis, internal and external viscous flows, momentum and energy considerations, and introduction to boundary layers.

Prerequisite(s): CHEM 1041 and ENGR 1080 and MATH 2081 with a grade of C or higher. MATH 2082 with a grade of C or higher or concurrently enrolled.

Recommendation: ENGR 2070 with grade of C or higher.

At the end of this course, students will be able to

  1. apply the principles of mathematics and physics to real-world flow problems.
  2. analyze viscous and nonviscous flows.
  3. explain how flow parameters and boundary conditions control fluid flow.
  4. describe how the boundary of flowing fluid affects its flow field.
  5. simplify continuum equations to solve for fluid flow under specific conditions.
  6. differentiate between internal and external flows.
  7. describe the parameters of compressible and incompressible flows.
  8. analyze flow fields of incompressible flows.
  9. characterize newtonian and nonnewtonian flows.
  10. analyze flow fields for Newtonian fluids.
  11. use flow symmetry to solve for fluid flows.
  12. use dimensionless numbers to simplify flow equations.
