DENA 1022 - Dental Specialties

Course Description: This course provides instruction in fundamental principles, instrumentation, and procedures for the specialty areas of dentistry. These specialties include oral and maxillofacial surgery, provisional coverage, implants, endodontics, periodontics, fixed and removable prosthodontics, pedriatric dentistry, and orthodontics. Students must be able to perform physical tasks to complete course requirements and pass a Department of Human Services background study with no restrictions.

Major Content

Pre- and Post-surgical instructions for patients
Oral surgery instruments, functions, and procedures for oral and maxillofacial surgery
Manipulation and identification of oral surgery materials and products
Endodontic instruments, functions, and procedures for oral surgery
Manipulation and identification of endodontic materials and products
Periodontal disease and treatment, instruments, functions, and procedures for periodontics
Manipulation and identification of periodontic materials and products
Indications and contraindications for fixed and removable prosthodontics
Custom trays for immediate dentures
The role of the laboratory technician for fixed and removable prosthodontics
Provisional coverage for crowns and bridges utilizing and manipulating various materials
Pediatric dental patients and the stages experienced by children from birth to adolescence
Dental Implants
Treatment planning for the pediatric patient
Diagnostic records used to assess orthodontic situation
Handling, storage, and disposal of infectious and hazardous waste

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course students will be able to:

identify and use correct terminology for each of the specialty areas.
identify the unique needs of the dental patient in each of the specialty areas.
describe the different dental procedures with the appropriate armamentarium in the required dental specialty areas.
describe the assistant’s role while assisting in each of the specialty areas.
deliver pre- and post-surgical instructions to patients undergoing surgical procedure.
safely handle, store, and dispose of hazardous waste.
