Course Description: General education teachers, paraeducators, and special education teachers together play a vital role in supporting and providing instruction to learners with exceptionalities. This course provides an in-depth exploration of the diverse and exceptional characteristics and needs of students served by special education, including those identified as gifted. The course also explores interventions and accommodations necessary to ensure that students receive a free and appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment. This course requires participation in 10 hours of field experience activities in K-12 schools. Students provide their own transportation and a Minnesota Human Services background study with no restrictions may be required.This is a required course for the Minnesota State Special Education Transfer Pathway degree and includes MN Standards of Effective Practice and Core Skills for Special Educators.

Prerequisite(s): Course placement into college-level English and Reading OR completion of ENGL 0950  with a grade of C or higher OR completion of RDNG 0940  with a grade of C or higher and qualifying English Placement Exam OR completion of RDNG 0950  with a grade of C or higher and ENGL 0090  with a grade of C or higher OR completion of ESOL 0051  with a grade of C or higher and ESOL 0052  with a grade of C or higher.
