EMSB 1020 - Emergency Medical Technician

Course Description: This course delivers the National EMS Educational Standards adopted by the state of Minnesota for Emergency Medical Technician education requirements.  This course meets the needs of the entry-level Emergency Medical Technician for direct employment in an emergency ambulance service, basic transport service, an emergency department, police department, security department, or fire department. Completion of the EMT course prepares the student for the National Registry of EMT examination. Successful completion of the National Registry exam is recognized by the state of Minnesota to generate the state certification required to work and volunteer as an EMT in Minnesota. Proof of current/unexpired American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Provider card required prior to the end of EMT course. The AHA BLS Provider course may be taken concurrently with the EMT course. Students must successfully pass the Minnesota Human Services and/or National background studies with no restrictions. Students must be able to perform physical tasks to complete course requirements.

Prerequisite(s): Course placement into college-level English and Reading OR completion of ENGL 0950  with a grade of C or higher OR completion of RDNG 0940  with a grade of C or higher and qualifying English Placement Exam OR completion of RDNG 0950  with a grade of C or higher and ENGL 0090  with a grade of C or higher OR completion of ESOL 0051  with a grade of C or higher and ESOL 0052  with a grade of C or higher.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course students will be able to:

1. apply knowledge of the EMS system, safety/well-being of the EMT, medical/legal and ethical issues to the provision of emergency care.

2. apply knowledge of the anatomy and function of all human systems to the practice of EMS.

3. use anatomical and medical terms and abbreviations in written and oral communication with colleagues and other health care professionals.

4. apply knowledge of the pathophysiology of respiration and perfusion to patient assessment and management.

5. apply knowledge of life span development to patient assessment and management.

6. apply knowledge of the principles of public health epidemiology including public health emergencies, public health monitoring, health promotion and illness and injury prevention.

7. apply knowledge of the medications the EMT may administer to a patient during an emergency and chronic or maintenance medications the patient may be taking.

8. apply knowledge of anatomy and physiology to patient assessment and management in order to assure a patent airway, adequate mechanical ventilation and respiration for patients of all ages.

9. apply scene information and patient assessment findings (scene size up, primary and secondary assessment, patient history and reassessment) to guide emergency management.

10. apply knowledge to provide basic emergency care and transportation based on assessment findings for an acutely ill patient.

11. apply knowledge of the causes, pathophysiology and management of shock, respiratory failure or arrest, cardiac failure or arrest, termination of resuscitative efforts and post resuscitation management.

12. apply knowledge to provide basic emergency care and transportation based on assessment findings for an acutely injured patient.

13. apply knowledge of growth, development and aging and assessment findings to provide basic emergency care and transportation for a patient with special needs.

14. apply knowledge of operational roles and responsibilities to ensure patient, public and personnel safety.
