Course Description: This course is intended for general students and music majors with little or no previous keyboard experience. The course introduces concepts and skills necessary to achieve keyboard competency, including foundational piano technique, basic repertoire, listening skills, and elements of music theory and history.

Major Content

1. A brief historic outline of the evolution of the family of keyboard instruments and keyboard/piano music
2. A survey of musical styles, time periods, and genres conducted through the practice of their respective keyboard techniques
3. An introduction to basic piano repertoire and activities to develop keyboard competency
4. An introduction to elementary music theory through the performance of a variety of piano music of appropriate technical difficulty
5. An exploration of the art of performance interpretation through the instructor’s demonstration, group discussion, and verbal and written reflection
6. An examination of notable examples of piano music with the purpose of analyzing the historical and cultural circumstances of their conception, uniqueness of their specific content and form, and addressing the technical skills needed for their successful performance
