Course Description: This is the second course in the Music Theory and Ear Training sequence for music majors. Theory topics include texture, two- and four-part voice leading, more advanced chord progressions, harmonic function, analysis, and composition. Ear Training skills include dictation and sight-singing of basic melodies, rhythms, and harmonic progressions.

Major Content
 

1. Theory
   1. Musical texture
   2. Melodic concepts including two-part species counterpoint, phrase structure and cadences, nonharmonic tones, sequences, and other melodic development
   3. Harmonic concepts including all triads and seventh chords, harmonic progressions and function, four-part chorale analysis using Roman numerals and chord symbols, and basic chromaticism
   4. Analysis and composition of two- and four-part structures
2. Ear Training
   1. Aural identification of musical elements covered in the course
   2. Dictation and sight-singing of basic melodies (common clefs and meters, melodies with steps and triadic leaps, major and minor modes)
   3. Dictation and sight-singing of basic rhythms (common meters including beat division, rests, ties, etc.)
   4. Dictation and sight-singing of basic harmonic progressions (including triads, seventh chords, and cadence ID)
   5. Improvisational activities and keyboard application of the course material

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

1. identify musical textures and melodic concepts.
2. analyze two-voice counterpoint and four-voice chorales.
3. compose two-voice counterpoint and four-voice chorales.
4. describe harmonic function of chord progressions.
5. transcribe basic rhythms.
6. perform basic rhythms at sight.
7. transcribe basic melodies.
8. sing basic melodies at sight.
9. transcribe basic harmonic progressions.
10. sing basic harmonic progressions at sight.
