Course Description: This is the third course in the Music Theory and Ear Training sequence for music majors. Theory topics include secondary dominants, modulation, chromatic harmony, extended harmonies, analysis, and composition. Ear Training skills include dictation and sight-singing of intermediate melodies, rhythms, and harmonic progressions.

Major Content

Theory
1. More advanced harmonic progressions including secondary dominants and modulation
2. Chromatic harmony including borrowed chords, Neapolitan 6^th, Augmented 6ths, and extended harmonies
3. Analysis of pieces using advanced progressions and chromatic harmony
4. Composition of pieces using advanced progressions and chromatic harmony
Ear Training
1. Two-part rhythmic & melodic dictation
2. Dictation and sight-singing of intermediate melodies (common and less common meters, leaps, introduction of chromaticism)
3. Dictation and sight-singing of intermediate rhythms (common simple & compound meters with subdivision, syncopation, triplets, less common meters)
4. Dictation and sight-singing of intermediate harmonic progressions (all diatonic triads and seventh chords)
5. Improvisational activities and keyboard application of the course material
