BIOL 2035 - Microbiology Credits: 3 Hours/Week: Lecture 2Lab 3 Course Description: This is a lab science course that surveys the major groups of microorganisms with an emphasis on their structural characteristics, factors affecting growth and reproduction, interactions with host organisms and physical and chemical methods of control. Issues related to antibiotic use and infectious diseases are included. The laboratory portion includes experiences in the safe handling of microorganisms, and methods for the culture, visualization, and identification of known and unknown microorganisms. Learning Outcomes At the end of this course students will be able to:
- Demonstrate the proper classification and nomenclature of microorganisms
- Compare and contrast the structures, functions, and replication of microorganisms
- Explain how microorganisms adapt to their environment through genetic changes and the significance of these changes
- Describe the methods for culture and visualization of microorganisms
- Determine appropriate physical and chemical methods for the control of microorganisms
- Explain the mechanisms of action of antimicrobial drugs, interactions between drugs and host, and the development and effects of antibiotic resistance
- Explain the general process for the establishment, progress, and transmission of infections
- Describe the components and functioning of the nonspecific and specific mechanisms of host defense
- Explain the application of immunologic principles for the detection and identification of microorganisms
- Compare and contrast normal and abnormal host cell response to microbial infection
- Identify key environmental, political, and social factors contributing to the spread and treatment of microbial diseases using real world and simulated case studies
- Demonstrate laboratory skills in aseptic technique, microscopy, culture, isolation, and identification of microorganisms
