EDUC 1020 - Portfolios I for Educators

Credits: 1
Hours/Week: Lecture 1Lab None
Course Description: This course is recommended as a first semester course for all education majors. Students will document and reflect upon their competence in the act of teaching by developing an electronic, standards-based portfolio. Students will participate in field experience. Students need to arrange transportation. A Minnesota Human Service background study with no restrictions may be required. Professional material related to the teaching process, or artifacts, will be collected and reflected upon.

  2. Field Experience Roles and Responsibilities of teachers and paraprofessionals Describe the school setting Collaboration with personnel
  3. Portfolios What is a Portfolio? What is a Standards-Based Portfolio? What are the advantages? What are the benefits?
  4. Technology Functions of electronic portfolio Organization- Naming files Equipment- Uploading files and photos

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course students will be able to:

  1. define the meaning and purpose behind Teacher Standards and Paraeducator Competencies.
  2. select professional material (artifacts) to be stored in their portfolios.
  3. describe the advantages and benefits of an electronic portfolio.
  4. collect professional material (artifacts) to be stored in their portfolios.
  5. collaborate with support personnel.
  6. demonstrate competency in using technology.
  7. demonstrate knowledge and skill with educational technologies.
  8. demonstrate reflection on professional material (artifacts) to be stored in their portfolios.
  9. describe procedures and processes of a school setting.
  10. identify the various roles and responsibilities of a teacher.
