EMS 2002 - Pediatric Advanced Life Support Credits: 1 Hours/Week: Lecture 0.5Lab 1 Course Description: This course is designed to provide physicians, nurses, paramedics, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare providers with the skills to provide advanced life support to pediatric patients. Through the PALS course, providers will enhance their skills in the treatment of the pediatric victim of cardiac, respiratory, and other emergencies. Emphasis is placed on American Heart association PALS algorithms. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will obtain PALS certification. Students must have knowledge of cardiac medications and proficiency in obtaining vascular access, ECG interpretation, and manual defibrillator operation prior to enrolling in this course. Prerequisite(s): Completion of EMS 1010 with current certification or current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider or equivalent certification. Students must possess certification or licensure as a paramedic, registered nurse (RN), medical doctor (MD), doctor of osteopathy (DO), respiratory therapist (RT), dentist (DDS), or physicians assistant (PA). Learning Outcomes At the end of this course students will be able to:
- insert simple airway adjuncts
- insert an intraosseous needle
- obtain vascular access
- manage a pediatric patient with a life-threatening cardiac rhythm
- direct the actions of a resuscitation team
- use appropriate electrical therapy
- select the energy levels required for electrical interventions
- demonstrate electrical interventions
- recall indications, contraindications, doses, and routes of administration for drugs
- ventilate using a bag-valve-mask
- perform an endotracheal intubation
- confirm endotracheal tube placement
- relieve an airway obstruction
- manage a tracheostomy
- manage a pediatric patient with a respiratory emergency
- manage a pediatric patient in hypotensive shock
