INTD 2050 - Commercial Design Studio

Course Description: This course concentrates on designing a commercial space that meets programming requirements, commercial building codes, and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Design Guidelines. It entails creating a full set of working drawings as well as sourcing furniture and finishes to meet commercial expectations.

  6. design development documents: space plan, materials plan, furniture plan, lighting and electrical plan, elevations, and details
  7. furniture, fabric, fixtures, and finishes
  8. write specifications for contractors
  9. presentation boards
  10. presentations to clients
  11. work to be submitted for Interior Design Portfolio 17x22

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course students will be able to:

  1. evaluate current ethical and legal issues of commercial interior design.
  2. plan a commercial space to adhere to the International Building Code (IBC) and the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines.
  3. develop schematic designs and design development.
  4. draft design development documents: space plan, materials plan, furniture plan, lighting and electrical plan, reflected ceiling plans, elevations, and details.
  5. source furniture, fixtures, and equipment to meet the IBC.
  6. specify furniture and finishes safe for all occupants that will comply with fire codes.
  7. write specifications for contractors.
  8. analyze building codes.
  9. interpret a program to design a commercial space.
