Program Description
The Century College Associate Degree Nursing Program is designed to educate students who are prepared to begin professional nursing careers and administer safe, culturally competent patient-centered nursing care in a variety of healthcare settings in our increasingly diverse communities. Coursework includes nursing theory focusing on holistic assessment, therapeutic nursing interventions including complementary/alternative modalities, communication, levels of prevention, critical thinking, collaboration and leadership/management concepts. Clinical application occurs in a variety of settings including: acute, sub-acute, and long-term care facilities, community clinics, schools, and home health settings. Safe, caring, competent nursing care across the lifespan is fostered. Graduates are awarded an associate in science degree in nursing and are eligible to apply to take the NCLEX-RN and meet the Minnesota State Board of Nursing requirements for licensure. Graduates are also able to continue for a further three semesters with upper-division full-partner schools in the Minnesota Alliance for Nursing Education (MANE) to complete their Bachelor of Science in Nursing. The Mobility Nursing Track is offered to qualified licensed practical nurses (LPN). Mobility track students are granted 5 credits of advanced standing and participate in a transition course to assist in the change of role to professional nursing. All students will be dually enrolled in Century College and an upper-division full-partner MANE college to allow seamless education to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. A Minnesota statewide nursing articulation agreement provides articulation agreements to students who pursue their bachelor’s degree from most baccalaureate nursing programs offered throughout the state who are not participating in the MANE initiative.
Program Prerequisites
Special Application to Nursing is required. Students must meet Nursing academic admission requirements. Minimum requirements based on college performance include:
- Completion of four general education (Minnesota Transfer Curriculum) courses with a GPA in those courses of 2.75 or higher. Courses include: ENGL 1020 OR ENGL 1021 ; PSYC 1020 ; and *BIOL 1020 OR *CHEM 1020 , and one MnTC General Education course as required for the Nursing program. *Please be advised: BIOL 1020 and CHEM 1020 are BOTH REQUIRED prerequisites for BIOL 2031 and must be completed prior to applying if BIOL 2031 has not been completed. GPA scores will be used, along with other admission criteria, to rank each candidate for admission purposes.
- Specific minimum assessment scores in reading and writing or specific coursework in those areas, to meet college-level requirements.
- All College/University transcripts must be sent to Century College.
- Applicants must complete a required nursing program admission exam, the ATI TEAS prior to the application deadline. See application packet or website for more information on registering for this exam. Scores for this exam will be used, along with other admission criteria, to rank each candidate for admission purposes.
- Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission when there are more applicants than spaces in the program. Applicants are ranked and selected for admission based on criteria.
- Please refer to the Nursing application information available online and in the Admissions Office and Advising, Counseling & Career Center for more details. Applicants are responsible for knowing the information within including any changes as these materials are updated regularly. Also see the Application Advising Review sheet available in the Advising, Counseling & Career Center and online.
- Timing of coursework is critical in order to meet application deadlines. Students are strongly encouraged to consult with an advisor or counselor for planning their coursework.
- Application deadline for the fall semester is February 1st of each year; application deadline for the spring semester is June 1st of each year.
Special Instructions
Admission into this program requires a special application and is highly competitive. The college will not be able to accept all applicants that meet the minimum admission standards. Application requirements are subject to change.
All applicants must complete the ATI TEAS pre-nursing admission exam prior to the application deadline. Exam scores will be applied to selection criteria for admissions. See the Nursing program webpage for exam and registration details. In addition, applicants are asked to complete a personal statement (1,000 words maximum) that will not impact admissions for the Fall 2020 admissions cycle, but will be used to determine future criteria for Holistic Admissions.
Minnesota Department of Health requires any individual having contact with patients to complete a background study prior to starting the clinical experience. An individual may be disqualified from having patient contact and would not be permitted to participate in the clinical experience if a clearance is not issued. This would result in the inability to successfully complete the nursing course requirements. Call MN Department of Human Services with specific questions, 651.431.2000. Effective 2014, The Minnesota Board of Nursing requires all new licensure applicants to complete an FBI Fingerprint Federal Background Study. Results of this study may affect a new licensure applicants’ ability to become licensed as a Registered Nurse in Minnesota.

Program Note
*Students who complete PSYC 1020 and PSYC 1041 at Century, will reach 8 cr. in Goal 5 and may not need to complete any MnTC electives to reach the 40 cr. MnTC total. Three (3) credit transfer courses equivalent to PSYC 1020 and/or 1041 are accepted, however students are still required to reach 40-credit MnTC requirement. For students planning to complete a BSN through MANE, MATH 1025 , Goal 6 second discipline, and/or Theme goals are recommended. See your Advisor/Counselor for assistance.
Students must earn a minimum of a C grade in every required course for the Nursing degree.
Minimum MnTC GPA of 2.75 must be maintained prior to and during Nursing coursework.
Most of the required nursing courses are offered ONLY during the day. Some of the clinical experiences may be during evening hours. Students must follow the prescribed schedule. Some of the general education courses may be offered ONLY day or evening. For most students, the time for completion of this degree is longer than two and a half years, due to student preference for completing many of the general education courses prior to starting the nursing courses. Nursing courses start each Fall and Spring Semesters. Some limited nursing courses may be available in summer terms.

This degree program is designed for both employment preparation and transfer. Some of the courses may not transfer to a number of four-year colleges. If you are considering the possibility of transfer, you may wish to talk with your advisor, counselor, or program instructor before registering to discuss your goals, look at programs designed for transfer, and develop a plan. All students will be dually enrolled in Century College and an upper-division full-partner MANE college, currently Metropolitan State University, to allow seamless education to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. A Minnesota statewide nursing articulation agreement provides articulation agreements to students who pursue their bachelor’s degree from most baccalaureate nursing programs offered throughout the state who are not participating in the MANE initiative.
