Program Description

The Certificate in Communication Studies is intended to prepare students for the demands of communication-rich workplaces. While there is no specific occupation that this certificate serves, employer surveys indicate that oral communication, teamwork, and leadership skills are crucial to success in the workplaces. Additionally, the Certificate in Communication can build a foundation for further studies in Communication for students who plan to transfer to four-year institutions to complete a Bachelor’s degree.

Program Prerequisites

Course placement into college-level English and Reading OR completion of ENGL 0950  with a grade of C or higher OR completion of RDNG 0940  with a grade of C or higher and qualifying English Placement Exam OR completion of RDNG 0950  with a grade of C or higher and ENGL 0090  with a grade of C or higher OR completion of ESOL 0051  with a grade of C or higher and ESOL 0052  with a grade of C or higher.

Special Instructions

Capstone course requires instructor approval to register, which will only be granted when all other coursework is completed or student is concurrently enrolled in coursework to complete requirements.

General Requirements for Degrees, Diplomas, and Certificates

Program Note

All coursework applied to the Certificate must have a grade of C or higher.
This Certificate can also be completed over the course of three or more semesters in conjunction with MnTC general education requirements and an Associates in Arts (AA), Associates in Fine Arts (AFA), or Associates in Science (AS) degree or other award(s). Students who wish to complete the certificate in a specific time frame should consult with a program instructor, academic advisor or counselor for planning assistance. For detailed information about MnTC general education requirements and the AA, AFA, and AS degrees, students should refer to the appropriate Sample Plan and work with an academic advisor or counselor to map out their complete academic plan.

This certificate often is intended for transfer to a four-year institution. If you are considering the possibility of transfer, you may wish to talk with an advisor, counselor, or the program instructor before registering to discuss your goals and look at programs designed for transfer. An articulation agreement exists with Minnesota State University-Mankato in Communication Studies. Students may also want to complete Century’s entire 40 credit Minnesota Transfer Curriculum or Associate of Arts Degree. See an advisor or counselor for assistance with planning for this transfer.

Program Learning Outcomes

At the end of this program students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the writing and speaking processes through invention, organization, drafting, revision, editing, and presentation.
  • Participate effectively in groups with emphasis on listening, critical and reflective thinking, and responding.
  • Locate material from diverse sources and points of view, evaluate, and synthesize in a responsible manner.
  • Employ syntax and usage appropriate to academic disciplines and the professional world.
  • Use authority, point-of-view, and individual voice and style in their writing and speaking.
