Program Description

The Kitchen and Bath Design certificate program is accredited by the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) and designed to prepare individuals for entry-level and advanced positions in the kitchen and bath design industry. This program includes the knowledge, skills, and professionalism necessary for working in this specialized design area. Students will learn presentation standards, construction and mechanical systems, basics of kitchen and bath design, materials and estimating, lighting, universal design, theme application, business practices for kitchen and bath designers, and computer-aided drafting specific for the kitchen and bathroom design industry. As a culmination of all these courses, an internship within a kitchen and/or bath design firm is required. The basic competencies of this program are based on the specifications encouraged by the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) and is supported by the use of their reference and resource materials.

Program Prerequisites

  • Attendance at a free Kitchen and Bath Program Information Session, conducted by faculty, is required to learn more about the program. (See dates on website.) If you are out-of-state or cannot attend an information session, you must email Margaret.Krohn@century.edu to have the information sent and to discuss the program. Application to the College must be completed and accepted by the College.
  • Students will be required to have a laptop computer that meets the specifications required by the program, for use throughout the duration of the program.

Special Instructions

A laptop computer is required for the Kitchen and Bath Design program.  Please coordinate with program director to confirm your computer meets the computer aided drafting (CAD) software requirements needed for coursework.

Program Note

Students will be required to have a laptop computer that meets the specifications required by the program, for use throughout the duration of the program.

The Career/Occupational Elective 3 credit requirement may be fulfilled by other instructor-approved courses by academic petition such as: INTD 1060 - Furniture Styles and Periods , 3 credits. These credits may also be fulfilled with courses from prior higher education/college coursework. See program instructors for more information and assistance.

This program is intended primarily for employment preparation rather than transfer to a four-year institution. Some courses may not transfer to a number of four-year colleges. If you are considering the possibility of transfer, you may wish to talk with your advisor, counselor, or program instructor before registering to discuss your goals, look at programs designed for transfer, and develop a plan.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon graduation, Kitchen and Bath Design students will be able to:

  • demonstrate the academic and industry proficiency at an entry level in kitchen and bath design knowledge, skills, and abilities and qualifies to apply for the CKBD exam.
  • demonstrate the ability to apply their knowledge, skills, and abilities in new design challenges.
  • identify and interpret ethical, social, and professional issues associated within the kitchen and bath design industry.
  • demonstrate the understanding of construction, business and project management, and kitchen and bath product knowledge as it relates to the industry.
  • demonstrate understanding of the basics of design within a given space.
