Program Description
The Photographic Careers diploma prepares students for a successful career in professional photography. Course assignments ready students for event, location, and studio shooting. The program covers what professional photographers need to jump start their careers. Topics include professional equipment, editing, workflow, business and marketing practices for photographers, lighting, and portfolio development. Emphasis is on providing skills necessary for those wishing to start a career in photography.
This program is part of the Visual Communications Careers area and is designed to provide you with the skills you need to enter a career upon completion. Although the Diploma is not designed for transfer to a four-year school, your general education course typically will transfer. Some of your career-oriented courses may also transfer to specific majors at certain schools through the petition process.

This program is intended primarily for employment preparation rather than transfer to a four-year institution. Some courses may not transfer to a number of four-year colleges. If you are considering the possibility of transfer, you may wish to talk with your advisor, counselor, or program instructor before registering to discuss your goals, look at programs designed for transfer, and develop a plan. Articulation agreements exist with Bemidji State University, Metropolitan State University, and Minnesota State University - Moorhead.

At the end of this program students will be able to:

Demonstrate photography lighting and editing skills that meet entry-level industry standards.

Demonstrate marketing and business practices necessary for the operations of a photography business.

Prepare and demonstrate a portfolio at the annual VCC Program Portfolio Show.
