Program Description
The Associate of Fine Arts (AFA) in Music offers a focused, two-year curriculum that comprises the first two years of a baccalaureate degree in music. Core music requirements include music theory, ear training, music history, world music, solo and ensemble performance, keyboard competency, music technology, and individual study of a primary instrument/voice with faculty artists. The AFA in Music articulates with Minnesota State University at Mankato and can transfer to other institutions as well. Century College is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music.

Major Elective Requirements
Select at least 2 credits of MUSC Piano Courses
Select at least 4 credits of MUSC Ensemble Courses
(an ensemble may be taken up to 4 times for credit) Select at least 4 credits of MUSC Private Lesson Courses

Goal 2: Critical Thinking
Fulfilled when all MnTC goals for this degree are complete. Goal 3 and/or 4: Natural Sciences/Math/Logical Reasoning
Minimum of 6 credits: two courses from either Goal 3 and/or Goal 4.
NOTE: Goal 3 courses do not have to be lab courses. Goal 4 courses must be numbered between MATH 1025 and MATH 1082 , or PHIL 1041 Goal 5: History/Social/Behavioral Sciences
Minimum of 6 credits: two courses from two different disciplines. Goal 6: Humanities/Fine Arts
Minimum of 15 credits: 12 in MUSC and 3 from another discipline. Goals 7-10: Theme Goals
Three credits in each of two Goal areas selected from Goals 7, 8, 9 or 10 are required. Many courses from Goals 1-6 also meet Goals 7-10. One course may fulfill a maximum of two Goals. Credits count only once. Goal 8: Global Perspectives

This degree program is intended primarily for transfer to a four-year institution. Students are advised to consult with their advisor/counselor and the Music faculty before registering to discuss their goals and develop a plan for transfer. An Articulation Agreement exists with Minnesota State University-Mankato. Students planning to transfer to the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities should consult the U of M Liberal Education (General Education) Requirements page regarding general education requirements in the AFA degree. Program Learning OutcomesAt the end of this program students will be able to: - Demonstrate technical facility, artistry, improvisation skills, and knowledge of repertoire representative of the chosen instrument/voice.
- Participate effectively as part of a performance ensemble.
- Demonstrate knowledge of Western music theory through analysis and composition.
- Demonstrate facility in ear training and sight-singing skills.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the cultural and historical development of music in the Western art tradition.
- Demonstrate knowledge of music traditions in cultures around the world.
- Demonstrate competency in keyboard skills.
- Demonstrate a basic working knowledge of the role of technology in music.
