Total Credits: 27
Major Number: 5933
CIP Code: 43.0107
Program Description
The Law Enforcement Certificate prepares individuals who have already completed a regionally-accredited bachelor’s degree or A.A./A.S./A.A.S. degree, in any discipline, for entry into the law enforcement profession in Minnesota. Completion of this program enables students to enroll with an institution who is a POST- certified skills provider. Upon successful completion of the certificate program and the final semester of skills, the student will be eligible to take the POST licensing examination, which is required to be hired as a peace officer in Minnesota. State requirements to become a peace officer include a college degree and a number of specific courses. For individuals already possessing a bachelor’s or A.A./A.S./A.A.S. degree, the Law Enforcement Certificate provides the additional courses that will lead to the practical skills component, which then qualifies the person to take the POST licensing exam. The Century College courses included are the required courses to be completed by the MN POST Board prior to attending skills with a certified provider. A minimum grade of C and a cumulative GPA of 2.50 must be earned in the required coursework.
Program Prerequisites
A bachelor’s degree (B.A., B.S., etc.) or an associate’s degree (A.A., A.S., A.A.S., etc.), in any discipline from a regionally-accredited college or university.
Special Instructions
Students are required to complete 50 hours of criminal-justice-related service learning to complete this program. This requirement will be met upon completion of CJS 2081 and CJS 2085 with a grade of C or higher. Students are advised not to enroll in both classes during the same semester.

Transfer, Articulation Agreements, and Partnerships
See the Century College website for information regarding transfer. This program is intended primarily for employment preparation rather than transfer to a four-year institution. Some courses may not transfer to a number of four-year colleges. If you are considering the possibility of transfer, you may wish to talk with your advisor, counselor, or program instructor before registering to discuss your goals, look at programs designed for transfer, and develop a plan.
Program Learning Outcomes
At the end of this program students will be able to:
- explain the U.S. and Minnesota criminal justice systems and laws
- speak, read, write and listen effectively in interpersonal and group interactions
- think critically and creatively in seeking solutions to practical and theoretical problems alone and in groups
- make timely decisions based on the circumstances and on law enforcement related theoretical and experiential learning
- demonstrate an understanding of the duties and tasks most commonly expected of peace officers and how to perform those tasks responsibly, ethically, and with appreciation for cultural differences
- integrate and apply all these abilities to serve citizens, protect individual freedoms, promote peace and justly enforce the law in the State of Minnesota
