Program Description
Biofabrication is a new and emerging field that integrates and applies knowledge from the disciplines of biology and additive and digital manufacturing. In this 16-credit certificate, students encounter state-of-the-art topics and solve innovative problems, such as the ability to print living cells; bioprinting replacement human tissues and organs using bioidentical cells from the patient; creating personalized prosthetics and implants, as well as novel dosage forms and drug delivery devices. Students completing the certificate program have the opportunity to gain the advanced technical knowlege and the digital skills to allow them to thrive in this exciting new field.

Program Learning Outcomes
At the end of this program students will be able to:
- describe the basic structure and function of cells and tissues used in biofabrication.
- successfully complete the bioink preparation process, including selection of the bioink most appropriate for a particular bioprint construct.
- utilize 3D CAD and related software to successfully produce files for bioprinting.
- effectively operate a bioprinter to print a 3D construct with biological material.
- demonstrate proper microscope and staining techniques to analyze viability of 3D-printed biological material.
- demonstrate understanding of quality control aspects, processes, and workflow of the medical manufacturing setting.
