Program Note

A grade of C or higher in all career/occupational courses and all specific MnTC/general education course requirements is required.

Licensure information:

A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school or educational program is required for licensure. Eighteen semester credits of alcohol and drug counseling academic course work; 880 clock hours of supervised alcohol and drug counseling practicum, and written examination that demonstrates competence in the core functions must also be successfully completed for licensure.

Students completing the Addiction Counseling A.S. degree program can apply for a temporary permit to practice alcohol and drug counseling while working under direct supervision of a licensed counselor and enrolled in course work to complete a bachelor’s degree for a maximum of 5 years. An alcohol and drug counselor technician (a non-licensed position) may perform:

1. Screening to determine appropriateness and eligibility for program.
2. Intake interviews following administrative and initial assessment procedures.
3. Orientation describing the general nature and goals of the program, rules, services, treatment cost and client rights.

This degree program is designed for both employment preparation and transfer. Some of the courses may not transfer to a number of four-year colleges. If you are considering the possibility of transfer, you may wish to talk with your advisor, counselor, or program instructor before registering to discuss your goals, look at programs designed for transfer, and develop a plan. An articulation agreement exists with the Alcohol & Drug Counseling and the Human Services majors at Metropolitan State University.

Program Learning Outcomes

At the end of this program students will be able to:

• Implement the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of Professional Practice of addiction counseling according to TAP 21.
• Apply the established diagnostic criteria for substance use disorder and describe treatment modalities and placement criteria within the continuum of care.
• Apply laws, rules and ethical guidelines related to the State of Minnesota and the addiction profession.
• Apply a variety of models and theories of addiction and other problems related to substance use.
• Determine the clients readiness for treatment and change as well as the needs of others involved in current situations
