Program Description

This certificate provides recognition to the student who has completed ten credits in the basic firefighter training series. With six additional elective credits, an entry level firefighter will receive acknowledgement that he/she is fully capable of providing emergency services. Additionally, this certificate fits into the Public Safety Associate in Applied Science Degree as a specialty track.

Special Instructions

FRTA 1091  and FRTA 1092  require fire gear to use in training. You must have full NFPA compliant turnout, NFPA compliant SCBA, SCBA Fit Test and current respirator medical evaluation. Local Fire Chiefs may have the authority to supplement compliant turnout. If you are not affiliated with a fire department and need turnout gear, please contact John Ehret for gear leasing options and information regarding cost.

FRTA 1091 , FRTA 1092  and FRTA 1095  are recommended to be taken in one semester – either Fall or Spring.

Program Learning Outcomes

At the end of this program students will be able to:

  • Analyze lifelong ethical and professional responsibilities of fire service personnel.
  • Demonstrate effective decision making, critical thinking, and communication skills in written and verbal form.
  • Examine the interactions between public safety agencies and fire service personnel.
  • Understand hiring practices, training evolutions, subcultures, attitudes and orientation of fire service personnel.
