Program Description
The Kitchen & Bath Design (KBD) certificate program prepares individuals for entry level and advanced positions in the Kitchen & Bath Design Industry. Classroom and online options are available. This program includes the knowledge, skills, and attributes necessary for working in this specialized design area. Course content includes presentation standards (hand-drafting techniques), computer-aided drafting, construction and mechanical systems, basics of kitchen and bath design, materials and estimation, lighting, universal design and theme application, and business practices for the kitchen and bathroom industry. As a culmination of all of these courses, an internship within a kitchen and/or bath-related firm is required. This Kitchen & Bath Design program is accredited by NKBA (National Kitchen & Bath Association). Basic competencies of this program are based on the specifications encouraged by NKBA, and are supported by the use of their reference and resource materials.
Program Prerequisites
Students with a prior degree (AA-PhD level) are exempt from Assessment Testing. Individuals with prior higher education/college credits may be exempt with proof of course completion. Student must send official transcript of the degree earned to the DARS/Transfer Department at Century College for evaluation.
If no appropriate prior degree/credits, students must complete Assessment Test in Math and English:
- Arithmetic assessment score of 64 or higher or Elementary Algebra assessment score of 76 or higher
OR assessment score/ACT score placement into MATH 0070 or above
OR completion MATH 0030 or MATH 0060 with a grade of “C” or higher.
- We strongly encourage students who score below 64 to meet with an advisor or counselor to discuss their review and course options PRIOR to Math assessment retesting or registering for a Math course.
- Assessment score placement in ENGL 1021 , or completion of ENGL 0090 with a grade of “C” or higher.
Special Instructions
Attendance at a free Kitchen and Bath Program Information Session, conducted by faculty, is required to learn more about the program. If you are out of state or cannot attend an information session, you must email Margaret.Krohn@century.edu to have the information sent and to discuss the program. Enrollment for new students begins in May for the Fall (August) start. Students should register by the end of May to ensure placement in the program. The SmarterMeasure assessment for online learning is also required for Kitchen & Bath students, http://century.smartermeasure.com/. SmarterMeasure is a web-based assessment for determining students’ level of readiness for taking online courses and takes about 20 minutes. After completion, you’ll receive a report with customized feedback and targeted resources itemizing your strengths and weaknesses in preparation for online learning.
