Program Description

The sports management program is designed to prepare individuals who seek to move into workplace positions and upgrade proficiency of individuals who are currently employed in sport management positions. This certificate focuses on the skills, knowledge, and credentials to support advancement of individuals within an organization and the sports management occupational field. Coursework helps participants develop a strong blend of field experience and leadership skills. The Sport/Athletic Management Certificate is designed to prepare individuals for employment as sport/athletic field managers.

Special Instructions

Students wishing to transfer to a four-year degree program should consult with their advisor, counselor or the program coordinator, and the college they intend to transfer to.  They may choose to also complete the AA degree including the Sports Management certificate credits in the elective area.

Program Note

Students may need to show proof of certification in First Aid and Safety for internship or employment. By completing HLTH 1010 , students would satisfy this requirement.

Some courses may not transfer to a number of four-year colleges. If you are considering the possibility of transfer, you may wish to talk with your advisor, counselor, or program instructor before registering to discuss your goals, look at programs designed for transfer, and develop a plan. This program has articulation agreements with Concordia University-St. Paul, Bemidji State University, and St. Cloud State University.

Program Learning Outcomes

At the end of this program students will be able to:

  • Students will gain a working knowledge and understanding of the different organizational units and operating departments within the realm of event and facility management.
  • Describe the sports management industry and key factors impacting the industry.
  • Understand the playability and safe use of facilities.
  • Perform as a member of a team in a work environment.
  • Perform expanded functions in a sports/entertainment facility
