Program Description

The Mathematics Transfer Pathway AA offers students a powerful option: the opportunity to complete an Associate of Arts degree with course credits that directly transfer to designated Mathematics bachelor’s degree programs at Minnesota State universities. The curriculum has been specifically designed so that students completing this pathway degree and transferring to one of the seven Minnesota State universities enter the university with junior-year status. All courses in the Transfer Pathway associate degree will directly transfer and apply to the designated bachelor’s degree programs in a related field.

Minnesota State universities include:  Bemidji State University; Metropolitan State University; Minnesota State University, Mankato; Minnesota State University Moorhead; Southwest Minnesota State University; St. Cloud State University; and Winona State University.

Students planning to transfer to a university outside of the Minnesota State system are advised to consult with their intended transfer institution as early as possible to determine transferability of the courses in this Transfer Pathway degree.

Goal 3: Natural Sciences

Minimum of 7 credits. Two courses from two different disciplines with at least one traditional lab course.

Minimum of 9 credits. Three courses from three different disciplines.

Goals 7-10: Theme Goals

Three credits in each of four Goal areas selected from Goals 7, 8, 9 and 10 are required.  Many courses from Goals 1-6 also meet Goals 7-10. One course may fulfill a maximum of two Goals. Credits count only once.

Program Note

The pathway will be most effective if students can identify the four-year institution where they will complete their degree.  Electives and MnTC courses should be selected to meet the specific program requirements of the institution where the student will earn their final degree. For example, some degree programs require a computer programming course or a calculus-based physics course, and some require a minor in specific areas in addition to the major degree.

This transfer pathway degree is designed to transfer to the following Minnesota State university designated baccalaureate degree majors. This information is subject to change. Bemidji State University:

  • Mathematics, BS

    Minimum transfer GPA of 2.0

    Minimum GPA of 2.25 for admission to the major.

    Students are encouraged to take and transfer in Differential Equations.


Metropolitan State University:

  • Industrial and Applied Mathematics, BS

    Minimum transfer GPA of 2.0

    Minimum GPA of 2.5 in Mathematics Courses.

    Students are encouraged to take and transfer in Statistics I, Physics I with Calculus, or Computer Programming I.


Minnesota State University, Mankato:

  • Mathematics, BS
  • Minimum transfer GPA of 2.0

    Minimum 2.5 GPA in Mathematics Courses.

    A minor is required.  Students are encouraged to take at least one course that applies to their minor. A list of minors and their requirements are listed in the Minnesota State University’s Mankato’s catalog.  Any minor may be chosen.


Minnesota State University, Moorhead:

  • Mathematics, BS

    Minimum transfer GPA of 2.0

    A Computer Programming course is required.


Southwest Minnesota State University:

  • Mathematics, BA
  • Applied Computational Mathematics, BS

St. Cloud State University:

  • Mathematics, BA

    Minimum transfer GPA of 2.0

    Minimum GPA of 2.4 in all major courses.

    A computer programming course and a minor in specific areas are required. A list of acceptable minors can be found in the University Catalog. Students are encouraged to take at least one course that applies to their minor.


Winona State University:

  • Mathematics, BA
  • Minimum transfer GPA of 2.0

    Grade of “B” or higher in Calculus I and II.

    Students are encouraged to take and transfer in the following courses:

    Linear Algebra 

    A math or computer science based introduction to discrete mathematical structures with applications

    First course in statistics.

    A minor is required so progress towards the minor should begin at the college level.

Program Learning Outcomes

At the end of this program students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate both a conceptual and operational understanding of Calculus of one and multiple variables.
  2. Assess and interpret complex situations, choose among several potentially appropriate mathematical methods of solution, and present solutions that include appropriate justification for their reasoning.
  3. Communicate and interact effectively with precision and clarity.
  4. Appreciate the dynamic role of mathematics in science, technology, and throughout history.
  5. Demonstrate proficiency in utilizing multiple approaches of solution to problems including analytical, numerical, and graphical solution methods.
