MEDA 1001 - Laboratory Techniques I

Credits: 5
Hours/Week: Lecture 4 Lab 2
Course Description: This course is designed for persons interested in pursuing a career in medical assisting. It introduces diagnostic procedures routinely performed in the physician’s office laboratory, including the collection and preparation of appropriate specimens, federal guidelines, safety, quality control, electrocardiography (ECG), emergencies and first aid procedures, microbiological testing and routine urinalysis. The student will focus on identifying ways to prevent transmission of disease, and the legal and ethical responsibilities for the health care professional. Students must be able to perform physical tasks to complete course requirements. Acceptance into the Medical Assistant program is required. This course requires students to be concurrently enrolled in MEDA 1011 .

Prerequisite(s): HLTH 1001  with a grade of C or higher and BIOL 1024  OR BIOL 2031  AND BIOL 2032 .Course placement into college-level English and Reading OR completion of ENGL 0950  with a grade of C or higher OR completion of RDNG 0940  with a grade of C or higher and qualifying English Placement Exam OR completion of RDNG 0950  with a grade of C or higher and ENGL 0090  with a grade of C or higher OR completion of ESOL 0051  with a grade of C or higher and ESOL 0052  with a grade of C or higher. Arithmetic placement score of 64 or higher or elementary algebra placement score of 76 or higher OR placement score /ACT score placement into MATH 0070  or above OR completion of MATH 0030  or MATH 0060  with a grade of C or higher. We strongly encourage students who score below 64 to meet with an advisor or counselor to discuss their review and course options PRIOR to Math placement retesting or registering for a MATH course.
