COS 1000 - Preclinical Introduction Credits: 3 Hours/Week: Lecture 2 Lab 2 Course Description: This course introduces students to various aspects of cosmetology careers, including professional image, Minnesota laws and rules, safety, and sanitation. Course topics include anatomy, electricity, and chemistry as they relate to the cosmetology profession. MnTC Goals None
Prerequisite(s): Course placement into ENGL 0950 and RDNG 0950 or above OR completion of RDNG 0940 with a grade of “C” or higher OR course placement into ESOL 0041 and ESOL 0052 and ESOL 1033 OR completion of ESOL 0031 with a grade of “C” or higher and ESOL 0042 with a grade of “C” or higher and ESOL 0043 with a grade of “C” or higher. - Types of bacteria
- Difference between pathogenic and nonpathogenic bacteria
- Minnesota laws and rules of cosmetology, esthetician, and manicurist
- Sanitation, disinfection and sterilization
- Mixing and method of disinfection for all equipment
- Nature of electricity and uses
- Understanding of anatomy and physiology as related to cosmetology, esthetics, or nail care
- Basic chemistry types and action of salon products
- Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)
- Hazardous waste
Learning Outcomes At the end of this course students will be able to:
- identify Minnesota laws and rules as related to Cosmetology.
