COS 1068 - Cosmetology Capstone

Credits: 3
Hours/Week: Lecture 2 Lab 2
Course Description: This capstone course enables students to update current skills in all areas of cosmetology. This course prepares students for the demands of a salon by using the peer teaching/learning process. This course prepares students for the state licensing exam and certification of skills. Students must be able to perform physical tasks to complete course requirements.

  1. Advanced & new trends in hair care.
  2. Advanced & new trends in nail care.
  3. Advanced & new trends in skin care.
  4. Advanced chemical control techniques.
  5. Advanced dermatology.
  6. Advanced trichology.
  7. Changes in Minnesota Cosmetology laws and rules.
  8. Changes in decontamination procedures.
  9. Current trends in hair color.
  10. Current trends in hair cutting.
  11. Current trends in hair styling.
  12. Develop peer teaching/learning skills.
  13. Finalize skills needed for certification (practical exam).
  14. Hazardous waste.
  15. State licensure exam.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course students will be able to:

  1. evaluate current trends in cosmetology.
  2. compare new hair products.
  3. select the correct chemicals for desired service.
  4. demonstrate correct haircutting techniques for the desired style.
  5. demonstrate safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste.
  6. demonstrate knowledge of cosmetology theory.
  7. demonstrate knowledge of current Minnesota Cosmetology laws and rules.
  8. practice skills for certification.
  9. demonstrate knowledge of all phases of cosmetology skills through Peer Teaching/Learning.
  10. discuss cosmetology theory.
  11. discuss new trends in cosmetology.
