Topics include coronal polish/stain removal, fluoride application, and application of pit and fissure sealants. Students must be able to perform physical tasks to complete course requirements. - Assistant’s role in application of sealants, fluoride, and coronal polish
- Commercial sealant products and effectiveness
- Disease protection protocol including MSDS and hazardous waste information
- Fluoride procedure and armamentarium
- Mechanical polishing of teeth procedure and armamentarium
- Patient advantages for coronal polish and stain removal
- Perform sealants, fluoride, and coronal polish on patients for evaluation
- Pit and fissure sealants procedure and armamentarium
- Practice and perform sealants, fluoride, and coronal polish on typodonts
- Sealant clinical indications/contraindications
- Stain types and abrasive agents
Learning Outcomes At the end of this course students will be able to:
- Describe mechanical polishing with stain identification and stain removal.
- Determine appropriate fluoride techniques.
- Determine appropriate sealant techniques.
- Recognize correct armamentarium.
- Adhere to aseptic technique guidelines.
- Demonstrate coronal polish, fluoride application, and sealant placement.
- Demonstrate knowledge of safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste.
- Describe fluoride and its uses.
- Define pit and fissure sealants
