HSCI 1100 - Behavioral Health: Implications & Interventions Credits: 3 Hours/Week: Lecture 2 Lab 2 Course Description: This course is intended for any student interested in careers that involve direct contact with patients/clients who may have mental health issues. It provides an overview of common behavioral health issues, communication techniques, and interventions that promote safety for clients, patients, caregivers, and professionals. The student will practice hands-on activities related to interventions. This course will be valuable to any student entering a career where there will be direct client contact, such as in health sciences, human services, chemical dependency, law enforcement, or other related disciplines. Prerequisite(s): None Corequisite(s): None Recommendation: Course placement into ENGL 0950 and RDNG 0950 or above OR completion of RDNG 0940 with a grade of C or higher OR course placement into ESOL 0051 and ESOL 0052 and ESOL 1033 OR completion of ESOL 0041 with a grade of C or higher and ESOL 0042 with a grade of C or higher and ESOL 0043 with a grade of C or higher.

- De-escalation strategy theory and applied practice
- Resource identification and referral
- Signs that professional help is needed for behavioral health issues
- Violent situation management and applied practice
- Scene safety ¿ anticipation and practice of prevention of unsafe situations for client & responder
- Legal & ethical standards in behavioral health care
- Protecting self & managing stress of encounters, including applied practice scenarios
- Roles of various health and public safety disciplines (EMS, 911)
- Sociocultural factors in behavioral health
- Tours of various facilities and environments
- Verbal and oral communication, interpersonal relationships, and other related personal skills such as self-discipline and time management
Learning Outcomes At the end of this course students will be able to:
- articulate legal, ethical and cultural factors influencing behavioral health.
- demonstrate interpersonal communication skills to de-escalate behavioral situations.
- describe the prevalence, symptoms, & treatment of common behavioral health disorders, including mood, anxiety, and psychotic disorders.
- describe the roles of the various disciplines in responding to a behavioral health crisis.
- determine course of action based on a basic behavioral health assessment.
- explain the behavioral effects of substance use.
- identify ways to maintain personal mental health including compassion fatigue prevention.
