Students will examine the lives and works of notable composers, the changing role of music in Western civilization, the advancement of music theory, and the development of music styles and genres. Learning Outcomes At the end of this course students will be able to:
- Articulate the changing relationship between music and society (i.e. the Church, Court, and Opera House) from the Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque and Classical eras
- Discuss the life and works of major composers of Western classical music through 1800
- Discuss the development of musical style and form through 1800
- Discuss significant works of Western classical music from the Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque and Classical eras
- Describe the development of music notation, theory, and aesthetics through 1800
- Discuss the development of significant music genres, including orchestra, opera, and chamber music through 1800
- Identify significant music works from antiquity through 1800 by ear and by sight
