OFFT 2050 - Introduction to Health Information Credits: 3 Hours/Week: Lecture 3 Lab None Course Description: This course is an introduction to the organization, analysis, and use of health information used in ambulatory, acute, and long-term care facilities. Topics will include data collection, structure and use of health information. Healthcare data sets, data storage, retrieval, monitoring and compliance reporting will also be discussed. - Data monitoring and compliance reporting
- Data sources (primary/secondary)
- Data storage and retrieval
- Data versus information
- Health record data collection tools (forms, screens, etc.)
- Health record documentation requirements (such as accreditation, certification, licensure)
- Healthcare data sets (such as OASIS, HEDIS, DEEDS, UHDDS)
- National Healthcare Information Infrastructure (NHII)
- Structure and use of health information (individual, comparative, aggregate)
- Type and content of health record (paper, electronic computer-based, e-health-personal, web-based)
Learning Outcomes At the end of this course students will be able to:
- apply organization-wide health record documentation guidelines.
- maintain the accuracy and completeness of the patient record as defined by organizational policy and external regulations and standards.
- verify timeliness, completeness, accuracy, and appropriateness of data and data sources for patient care, management, billing reports, registries, and/or databases.
- apply policies and procedures to ensure organizational compliance with regulations and standards.
- manage health data (such as data elements, data sets, and databases).
- apply clinical vocabularies and terminologies used in the organizations¿ health information systems.
- analyze documentation in health records.
- report compliance findings according to organizational policy.
- assist in preparing the organization for accreditation, licensing, and/or certification surveys.
- apply policies and procedures to ensure the accuracy of health data
