DENH 1021 - Head and Neck Anatomy Credits: 2 Hours/Week: Lecture None Lab None Course Description: This course is the study of the hard and soft tissues of the head and neck, including the skeletal, muscular, nervous, and venous systems with particular emphasis on the masticatory system. Learning Outcomes At the end of this course students will be able to:
- describe the action of the temporomandibular joint.
- identify the blood supply from the heart to all areas of the oral cavity.
- describe the anatomy, function, and purpose of each type of salivary gland.
- identify the branches of the trigeminal nerve from where they exit the skull to the last structure they supply.
- identify the effects local anesthetics have on the nerves and muscles of the head and neck.
- describe the interrelationship of the muscles and nerves in chewing, swallowing, and speech.
- identify the lymph drainage of the teeth and other oral structures.
- identify the origin, insertion, actions, and innervation of all muscles of the head and neck.
