Program Description

The AAS in Translation and Interpreting is designed to educate students who wish to develop professional interpreting skills and prepare for a career that serves our increasingly diverse population. It is especially well suited for students who have previous post-secondary education who wish to provide accurate, culturally-competent interpretation in a variety of settings. Coursework includes sight translation, consecutive interpreting, simultaneous interpreting, translation techniques, glossary development, standards of practice and codes of ethics of interpreting, intercultural communication, and socio-linguistics. Students will practice interpreting with material related to education, healthcare, community, social service agencies, legal, and other settings.

Program Prerequisites

Assessment score placement in RDNG 1000 , or completion of RDNG 0900  or RDNG 0950  with a grade of C or higher; assessment placement in ENGL 1021 , or completion of ENGL 0090  with a grade of C or higher; Advanced High or Superior Rating on the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) in the student’s weaker language, or equivalent prior to TRIN 1041 . Advanced Mid rating is considered on a case-by-case basis. For improvement of language skills and preparation prior to taking the OPI exam, it is recommended students complete TRIN 1035 , if needed.

Passing the Minnesota Human Services background study without restrictions may be required for the internship, service learning, and field experience requirements. For more information refer to the Translation and Interpreting webpage.

Special Instructions

Before enrolling in TRIN courses, students must submit the TRIN Student Information Form to trin@century.edu. Students are expected to have a high level of fluency in at least two languages before enrolling. For more information contact trin@century.edu.

Structured interpreting practicums, service learning and field experiences are important components of quality interpreter programs. Students in the Associate in Applied Science in Translation and Interpreting Program are required to complete a minimum of 60 hours of approved practicums, field experiences, or service learning, as a part of TRIN 2780 .

Students are allowed to register for first 3 courses in the program (if they meet college-level assessment score placement or RDNG 0900  or RDNG 0950  and ENGL 0090  prerequisites) prior to completing the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI).

Program Note

A grade of C or higher is required in all TRIN courses, Career/Occupational courses, and each MnTC course.

Not all courses are offered every semester. The sample plan assumes a fall semester start. Students beginning in spring semester may not be able to follow this sequence precisely. Students should seek help with course sequencing and planning from their advisors or program faculty.

This program is intended primarily for employment preparation rather than transfer to a four-year institution. Some courses may not transfer to a number of four-year colleges. If you are considering the possibility of transfer, you may wish to talk with your advisor, counselor, or program instructor before registering to discuss your goals, look at programs designed for transfer, and develop a plan. An articulation agreement exists with Minnesota State University, Mankato in Applied Organizational Studies.

Program Learning Outcomes

At the end of this program students will be able to:

  • Understand major concepts in the field, including cognitive processes interpreting, standards of practice, ethical decision-making, and translation strategies.
  • Understand legislative, cultural, and societal frameworks affecting interpreters and translators.
  • Understand domain-specific concepts and constraints in at least one specialized area in which translators and interpreters work (for example, medical, legal, or educational settings).
