Program Description
This certificate prepares students to enter the workplace as a Mental Health Behavioral Aide II. Mental Health Behavioral Aides help children and adolescents with emotional and behavioral concerns learn, practice, and retain skills that are initially taught by a therapist. This work may take place at the child’s home, school, or other settings in the community. The coursework in this certificate provides students with the theoretical and practical knowledge about mental health, human development, and psychological principles that they will need for this position, and prepares students to provide direct patient care under the supervision of a mental health professional.

Program Learning Outcomes
At the end of this program students will be able to:
- Explain how biological, psychological, and environmental factors affect mental health
- Describe common psychological disorders in the DSM, including their treatments
- Identify the types of psychotropic medications used with children and adults, as well as their potential side effects
- Explain physical, cognitive, and psychosocial developmental changes throughout childhood and adolescence
- Describe societal attitudes toward mental illness within contemporary society
- Demonstrate interpersonal communication skills that are effective in mental health-related situations, including de-escalation and redirecting behavior
